Q: What is this “Midwinter” meeting?
A: The Visual Materials Midwinter meeting is an open working meeting for the Steering Committee and any interested Section members. At Midwinter, the Steering Committee works on bylaws revisions, updates to the long-range plan, progress on projects, and work of the standing committees (Education, Communication, and Views) – required procedural tasks. All VM Section members have a stake in the development of the bylaws and the long-range plans and other committee work. The Steering Committee would like to encourage all members to provide input.
Q: Who is supposed to go?
A: Midwinter is open to all Visual Materials Section members; the Steering Committee is “supposed to go” however we want everyone to participate who has any interest in the work of the Section; all are welcome and encouraged to get involved!
Q: Why is this meeting being held at somebody’s house?
A: Midwinter meetings are hosted by the current Section chair at their home or the home of a fellow VM Section member or sometimes in a rental condo or vacation home. Out of town participants typically bunk at the home where the meeting is taking place or in recent years participate remotely in order to keep costs down.
Q: How much is this going to cost?
A: There is no registration fee for the Midwinter meeting; everyone who is physically present simply contributes to meals, which are prepared family style and eaten between and during discussions. The atmosphere is very informal!
Q: Why should I consider going?
A: This meeting is a great way to get familiar with what the Visual Materials Section of SAA does in addition to conference programs. Midwinter is a fantastic way to meet, network with, and become friends with your peers in the visual materials archives profession!
